Kevin Costner Goes To The Dogs
Posted On 10/24/2010 18:15:28

Kevin Costner goes to the dogs - the Orange Dogs.

Kevin Costner Orange Dogs

As an avid supporter of underdog charities, Kevin Costner found the Orange Dog mission to fit his requirements to a tee.  The Orange Dog mission flies dogs from the USA to Canada in a first class private jet. But these are not wealthy dogs, these are death row dogs.

Rescuing shelter dogs that are destined for the lethal injection was the goal of Orange Dog Founder, Jan Folk.  Read her story here http://orangedog.ca/

Puppy Tweets From Mattel

What do you get the puppy who has everything?

According to Mattel, the answer is "Puppy Tweet."  An automated Twitter tool that allows your dog to tweet.

Yes that is right.   Your dog is in control.  When it barks or moves around, your puppy's very own electronic tag sends a signal to a usb controller, and via the skills of modern technology, this is translated to a tweet on your puppy's very own Twitter page.

Perfect for the Dog and owner who don't like to be separated.  Or for the dog who is seeking international fame and wants to get word out.

Currently there are 500 pre-programmed tweets with Puppy Tweets.  Obviously Mattel is going keep these tweets fairly tame, not perhaps the thoughts that are actually going through your puppy's mind as it barks at the neighbour's cat, a passing dog, or chases the postman.  Nevermind what your dog thinks when chasing it's own tail, or licking various parts of it's anatomy.

At the moment this is little more than a gimmick designed to part owners with their money.   Think, however, about the potential.  Dog Tweets Owner About Burglery In Progress or perhaps Dog Saves Burning House With SOS Tweet

puppy tweets

It may take a little fine tuning and training before your dog can really control what it is tweeting, and no doubt there will be a few false alarms.  But it could be the neighbourhood watch of the future.  Animals controlling crime, alerting the world to disasters, and clogging the internet with mindless tweets.   Or even more scary, communicating between themselves to organise a global overthrow of the human tyrants ...

And it all began with Mattel and their Puppy Tweets

Orca Kills Trainer

A killer whale that kills trainer - and we are surprised?

orca killer whale

Don't get me wrong.  I think it is a great tragedy and my sincerest condolences go out to the family and freinds of the unlucky trainer.

But still, I am of the belief that trying to keep such a predator in captivity is an accident waiting to happen.  These creatures may be able to be trained to jump through metaphorical or physical hoops, but they have no training in conscience or morality.

Why shouldn't they take a snack of a passing tourist?

I can only imagine the boredum experienced by these creatures of the deep when they are confined in captivity - no matter how entertaining the keepers may think they are. I am sure the orca's abilities are no where near taxed by the resources availalbe in our theme parks.

The BBC reports of up to 24 attacks by captive Orca on people.  Not all these attacks have ended fatally fortunately.  But never the less, there are repeated examples of Killer whales killing when in captivity.  Surely this should be warning enough that they are not afraid to bite the hand that feeds them.

There is of course going to be a renewed debate over whether or not we should "Free Willy" and to be fair, I can see no valid reason why we should not.  Perhaps it is too late to free those in capitivity now, as the likely hood of their successful release is limited.  But perhaps we should at ending the continued breading in captivity program of these magnificent creatures.

What do you think - Free the killer whale?

Cougar Has Eye For Dalmatian

In a bizzare turn of events Mrs Marjorie Walton has a tale certain to raise the hair on the heads of her Grandchildren, not to mention her neighbours.

It seems that a local cougar decided Marjorie's Dalmation was the perfect meal.  On a chain outside 12 year old Dalmation was easy prey and the cougar was moving in.  Marjorie noticed the frightened appearance of Cyrus the dalmation and opened the door to see what was happening.

The next instant was a blurr as Cyrus flashed passed Marjorie closely pursued by a hungry cougar not wanting its breakfast to dissapear.  The slight senior citizen wieghing in under 100 pounds made loud noises to scare the large cat as it lept over the counter, tv, and eventually the table before dissapearing out the door again.

In the wake of the dissapearing cat was a traumatised dalmation suffering claw lacerations, a very startled senior citizen, and somewhat smaller and equally truamatized family cat.

DeClawing Outlawed
Posted On 11/18/2009 22:30:49

Los Angeles and Beverly Hills join Santa Monica and San Francisco banning declawing pets (the council vote was 5-0. This is ahead of a  new state law stopping local councils from being able to vote on issues related to veterinary medicine, due to come into effect next year.

This barbaric act of claw amputation can leave animals crippled and in pain for the rest of their lives.

The bans are opposed by The California Veterinary Medical Association that argues it will lead to more abandoned animals. They say it should be up to pet owners, and not government, about whether or not pets are declawed. Perhaps they are worried about the loss of income?

If your furniture is more important than your pets well-being I don't think you qualify to own animals.

What do you think?

Hamsters Take Number One Pet This Christmas

Toy robot hamsters that is. The new craze sweeping the pet world is in fact, toy robot hamsters called Zhu Zhu Pets.

The big toy chains can not keep them on the shelves, as frantic parents rush to make sure their kid's Christmas wishes are fulfilled.

Many long-time toy shop owners are saying these are the hottest toys that they have seen.  Many are comparing Zhu Zhu Pets to Beanie Babies.  Although they don't have appeal that lead to many collectors paying up to $2000 for Beanie Babies, the owner of Zhu Zhu pets will be happy to be worth the estimated net worth of Ty Warner, Beanie Babies creator, of $3.2 billion.

To date Chinese factories churn out  220,000 Zhu Zhu Pets a day. The first year alone estimated to be worth up to 400 Million in sales for Hornsby the toy's creator.

Perhaps it is a sign of people looking to break out of the global depression, but a buzz like this hasn't been seen in the toy world since Mattel Inc.’s 10th anniversary Tickle Me Elmo in 2006.

Certainly, the marketing has been a big part of the campaign with the TV commercials attracting a lot of requests to parents from eager young children.  The automated little furry pets have a certain heart appeal.  And with such low maintenance costs, how can parents turn them down.

If you can't get one from your local toy store, you may have to join the thousands of other parents turning to Amazon.com to Buy Your Zhu Zhu Pets << by using this link to buy your Zhu Zhu Pets you are supporting the owner of this site (and your support is much appreciated).

Horses and Winter Coughs
Posted On 10/24/2009 01:05:18

It's not just horseback riders that cough and wheeze at this time of year. Respiratory problems are common in horses as well. Loss of performance may be the first sign that something is wrong. Mildly affected animals may cough occasionally when eating or when starting work. As the condition gets worse they may cough almost continuously.

Why is coughing such a problem in the winter? We need look no further than the changes in management that accompany the colder weather. Horses spend more time inside, often stabled in close proximity to their companions, giving any infection the opportunity to spread. They are exposed to irritants and allergens in the hay and bedding.

Recurrent airway obstruction (also known as COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the horse equivalent of human asthma . It is an allergic condition, in which the horse reacts to small particles in the air. Chief among the culprits are fungal spores from the hay. This is a problem that seems to be becoming more common - probably due to the lack of good hay for horses.

We seem to have lost the ability to make good hay. Much of the hay fed to horses is dusty, and liberally sprinkled with fungal spores. Under poor storage conditions toxins such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) can accumulate. These can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract.

Dust from the bedding may make the problem worse. It's important to keep the bed clean and dry. Replacing dusty straw with clean shavings may be a good idea. But if the shavings are allowed to build up into a soggy deep litter bed the ammonia and endotoxins may cause more irritation than the straw ever did, and may make matters worse.

When assessing the air quality in a stable, remember that the horse spends much of his time with his nose close to the ground. The air you breathe in the middle of the stable may be completely different from the air the horse breathes when he's sniffing around the floor or eating his hay.

It can be difficult to differentiate between infectious or environmental causes of coughing. What can be done to investigate the problem? The vet will observe your horse breathing and listen to the chest with a stethoscope. (This is not the time to talk to him or her!)

Respiratory infections may also be involved - in particular, viruses such as influenza, and equine herpes virus. If an infectious disease is suspected, swabs can be taken from the nose to try to identify the organism responsible. Blood samples may contain antibodies to the offending virus.

In persistent cases it may be necessary to collect a sample of fluid from the airways. This is usually done using a flexible endoscope.

Although medicines can be used to help clear the horse's chest and reduce the inflammation, the most important factor in treatment is allowing the horse to breathe clean fresh air.

So how can you prevent your winter schedule being disrupted by coughing? First of all, avoid feeding poor quality hay. Soaking it may help. The water damps down the dust and makes the spores swell. But it also washes the water-soluble nutrients out of the hay and so reduces the feeding value. (If there is any doubt about the hygienic quality of the hay, your veterinarian or feed merchant may be able to have a sample tested to see if it is safe to feed.) Consider feeding haylage instead.

Let your horse have as much fresh air as possible. Turn out as much as the weather conditions allow. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the stable or barn. Avoid the temptation to close the stable up, even in the coldest weather. Keep the bed as dust-free, and as clean, as possible. Do not muck out the stable with your horse in it. Give the bedding time to settle - preferably an hour or more - before bringing the horse back inside.

Give your horse clean air to breathe, and hopefully you will both enjoy a cough-free winter.

100,000 Children At Risk From Turtles
Posted On 10/20/2009 01:04:51

Sale of Turtles Banned In USA

Actually, the sale of turtles under 4 inches has been banned since 1975 in the USA. The ban brought into effect by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is in response to the high risk of children catching salmonellosis from their pet.  They estimate as many as 100,000 children a year have been spared since the ban.

Salmonella carrying turtles do not necessarily appear sick and are not always "contageous." A point to note, because a "salmonella free" turtle may in fact just not have been shedding at the time it was tested.

Turtles are not the only culprits. Reptiles and amphibians of all kinds contribute to an estimated 74,000 cases of salmonellosis annually in the USA. The disease is especially dangerous to children under 5, pregnant women, the elderly, and other people with low immunity. Severe cases can lead to death.

Preventing turtle-associated salmonellosis

If you decide to have a turtle (or other reptile or amphibian) you should always keep them away from food and food preparation areas.  You should always pay particular attention to keeping them and their housing areas clean.  Always wash your hands after handling them. Keep them away from people at high risk to salmonella.

For further information on reccomended handling of turtles visit the CDC website.

Cat Saves Immigrant From Deportation

Illegal Overstayer Saved By Cat

In a bizzare ruling by Senior immigration judge Judith Gleeson, a South American man was granted residency because of a cat.

The cat, who's name has official suppression, was used by the South American overstayer to prove that he was in a committed relationship with his girlfriend and had settled in Britain.

Protected Identity Cat

Home Office officials did not find the cat excuse as compelling in the case of the man who was an over-stayer of 4 years and they made an appeal.  The judge did not back down, and granted both the man and his cat name suppression.

Will pets now be the first thing that immigrants seeking asylum purchase?  After all, it goes against human rights to separate people from their pets.

What do you think?  Is this a good thing, or will pets ultimately end up losers in a game that makes them pawns?
