Another Pet Food Recall

Nutro branded cat food is the latest in the ongoing saga of pet food recalls.

Mars Petcare chose to voluntarily recall it's Nutro branded products in the USA because of reported excessive Zinc levels and under-supplements of potassium.

They place the blame on one of their US based premix suppliers. But no matter whose fault it is, it is innocent pets who will once again suffer.

If you have been feeding your cat either Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care Dry Cat Food, or Nutro Max Cat Dry Food, check for 'best before' dates of between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010.  You can download a complete list of products care of straitstimes.com.

If your supplies fall into this category you should stop feeding them to your cat immediately and watch your cat for the following symptoms:

  • lack of appetite
  • weight loss
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea.

If your cat suffers these symptoms you should take it to the vet immediately.

As the the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority work with supermarkets to have the lethal food removed it is perhaps time to look at the kind of food you are feeding your beloved pets.

If you care about the animals in your family I suggest you seriously consider the healthy food option.

These pet food recalls are a far too regular event and the damage that is caused before the recalls is truly tragic.  But even when they are meeting the current standards you would be horrified if you knew exactly what your pet was eating.  Serving your pets food that you have prepared yourself is the only safe option.
