Have Your Cat Travel In A Car Without Stress

Cat Travel in a Vehicle

Travelling with a cat requires some pre travel preparation to ensure a comfortable trip for you and your pet.

The first experience a cat has with travelling in a vehicle can often be a stressful time with the cat becoming quite excited.  Although each cat reacts differently, keeping them calm is the secret to stress free travel.

Using a cage to contain your cat while travelling is a very good idea, especially if it is the first trip.  The last thing you want is an excited cat leaping around in the car whilst travelling.  It would be a danger to itself and to your ability to safely control the vehicle.

Taking a litter box can also be a good idea.  Excited cats may need to go to the toilet with little notice.  It is also possible that it will get sick if it is forced to wait for extended periods.  Avoid the mess and plan ahead.

Always have a supply of  water with you and use regular to stops to see if it needs a drink, particularly in hot weather. However, it is preferable the first few times your cat travels in a vehicle not have allowed it to eat beforehand as food can sometimes make cats feel sick.

If the cat seems calm then it is possible to let it out of the cage provided it sits quietly on a seat.
Don't leave any windows open where it might be able to get out and particularly when you stop the vehicle make sure it doesn't jump out the door and go somewhere where it could be endangered.

If you do have windows down make sure there are no drafts that could be affecting your cat and don't let it sit up in the back window of vehicles in direct sunlight where it might get overheated and become ill.

Most cats that have travelled as kittens won't mind travelling unless they associate travel with an unpleseant event.

A favorite blanket or bed in the vehicle will help comfort your cat, as would a comforting stroke. Always be aware of their state of well being and dont allow them to become overly anxious and you shouldn't have too many problems.
