A New House Or A New Version Of Your Old Pet?

This may sound absurd to some, but to the Otto's of Florida it was no contest.

The descendants of of the late Edwin Otto, involved with the founding of NASCAR, are obviously not short of money.  However, when the opportunity presented itself they had no hesitation in cloning their aged Labrador Sir Lancelot.

The couple won a Bioarts auction for the world's first commercially cloned dog.  The biotechnology company has currently 6 clients on its books hoping to have their pet cloned.

The Humane Society has been outspoken in its objection to cloning pets - especially when millions of dollars are being spent on the unwanted pet population.  However, the Otto's say they have given much more than the value of their cloned puppy to the Humane Society over the years.

Just because a dog has been cloned there is no guarantee that the clone will resemble the donor in more than appearance.  In other words don't expect to get to another Fido with your clone, as each animal has its own unique character traits.

The Ottos can be seen talking about their decision on the cloning here.
