Animal Behavior Cures Worse Than Problem?
I am always amazed at the cures some people come up with to prevent animals behaving in a particular way.
Here are some "cures" that I wonder about:
- Stop cats pooping on your lawn and garden by spreading around Big Cat manure sourced from your local zoo.
Is it just me or is spreading cat poop around to prevent cats pooping a little self defeating?
- Along the same lines, some people suggest you can stop cats from venturing into your yard to poop by planting prickly bushes, or scattering thorns and other prickly cuttings around.
You don't have poop in your yard, but you need protective clothing to venture out there yourself?
- How about this suggestion to stop cats scratching your furniture by The Early Show's resident veterinarian, Dr. Debbye Turner Bell.

To discourage the cat from returning to the object that you don't want them to scratch [affix] double-sided tape or contact paper (with the sticky side facing outward) to the furniture will deter the cat. Cats do not like the sticky feeling on their paws and will stay away. Noxious scents can also be used to keep a cat away from a chair or curtains..

Hands up all those who want their furniture covered with sticky tape and noxious odors?
- If you want to stop a dog barking you should have it neutered or spayed.
There are good reasons to desex your dog - but don't expect it to stop barking.
