Parakeet Droppings Prove Deadly.
Carol Dawson is left hooked to an oxygen tank at the age of 58 because of her love for parakeets.
Diagnosed with allergic alveolitis, which is also known as bird fancier's lung, a respiratory disease that requires Dawson to be hooked up to oxygen 24 hours a day. At first she thought it was asthma, a common family trait and was originally given inhalers by the doctors.
Dawson was eventually diagnosed with allergic alveolitis in 2000 many years after giving up her last Parakeet in 1973. Unfortunately the damage had already been done as allergic alveolitis or bird fancier's lung causes irreparable damage and is progressive. It needs to be treated in its earliest stages to be cured.
The cause of the condition is spores found in bird droppings causing respiratory problems when inhaled. For the majority of people this is not a serious problem, but for a few people it can lead to a life taking disease.
If you keep birds and have breathing problems it would be wise to get a check up as soon as possible, and make sure you inquire as to the possibility of allergic alveolitis.
