Pet Food Horror Stories Seem To Occur Every Day.

Before shopping for pet food there are some things you should be aware of.

Many brands of pet food put ingredients into their food that your pet may be allergic to. Just like humans many pets have allergies toward such things as corn, wheat, and soy.  Yet these are three main ingredients used as "fillers" in many varieties of pet food.

Corn, wheat, and soy are much cheaper than the alternative of including all meat, so often the bulk of pet food is made of these ingredients.  It would pay to check your pet's level of tolerance of these substances before feeding them on processed pet foods that contain them in bulk.  Especially if your pet is showing symptoms of allergies.  As with humans, allergies can occur later in your pet's life as well.  So do be aware of these issues.

Another ingredient often found in processed pet foods is "animal digests" which is the content of animal stomachs - this is used to make the food more appealing to your pet, especially dried foods. Often these "digests" are from chickens fed on grains and corn which at to the levels of these found in pet foods.

Preservatives can also be very harmful to your pet's health.  The preservatives most dangerous are the man made ones - namely BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin, which have adverse effects to the liver when consumed on a regular basis.  Natural preservatives such as tocopherols and vitamin E are a much healthier option.

So before you serve a healthy lunch of corn to your kitty you might want to test it for any allergies first.
